Peace Education and Global Understanding Posted on March 22nd, 2011 by

One topic we recently addressed in Intro to Peace Studies is: If we are able to educate for peace, what is the best way to do so? Here are some important follow-up questions that were raised in class: Is educating for peace any better than educating for war? After all, both are kinds of socialization. Furthermore, is it desirable to avoid socializing our children in either direction when it comes to gender, war, and peace? Is it even possible to avoid socialization? What is the purpose of socializing for gender equality and peace? We read from one author, John Dewey, who examined ways in which peace education “could become an effective instrument in promoting global understanding.” He says the goal of peace education is to achieve “international harmony,” which in the end is the most beneficial for everyone. Is promoting global understanding the best way to eliminate violence in our world? I believe it is a very important component. Fear of the “other” in any interaction often is a source of violence in the world, and the cure for this is mutual understanding. This after all is the basic idea behind negotiation as an alternative to war.
