An Imaginary Dichotomy Posted on April 16th, 2011 by

With the recent controversies over the company known as Wikileaks releasing governmental cables and reports from embassies and agencies, questions of war media versus peace media has grown.

But do categories such as these even really exist?

So often, we as humans, try to dichotomize the world into artificial categories that would not exist without our interference. Examples of these dichotomies include arguments about good versus evil, black versus white and war versus peace.

Maybe the real world cannot be so easily separated into opposite categories. Maybe reality lies somewhere in the middle, not in a world contrasted with opposites but in the murky in-between areas of ambiguity.

I think you are right to say that media cannot always be put into a clear category of war or peace type but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the tendencies of media to insight violence or bring about a faster peace resolution. The media can be a critical tool and evaluating the current trends of the media allows us to adapt and work towards peace inspiring media. It is very important to know how the media affects viewers because it is a main resource for world news.
